My Palette Purchases of 2018.

I thought this would be a fun post to look back on and reflect on what eyeshadow products I bought last year, whether I still have them, how I feel about them, etc. I decided to do this with only Sephora purchases as I was able to go far back and see what I had picked up. Are you ready to dive in with me?! Hope so!

I am actually quite surprised that I didn’t buy too many palettes the first 7 months of the year… wait a minute. Actually, I’m not surprised. I know that I tend to stay away from Sephora the first few months of the year because I spend my holidays buying tons of makeup. Thankfully, that did not happen this year, but I remember doing that years prior. Either way, I wanted to make this post to show myself just how much I buy and hopefully talk myself out of buying so many unnecessary eyeshadow palettes because I don’t need them all.

So here’s me ripping off the band aid: I bought a whopping 20 palettes at Sephora during the 2018 year! This is something I am NOT proud of. To some, this may not be a lot, but for me it definitely is, considering there are some I haven’t even used yet, and reflecting back, quite a handful I could have done without. Let’s get into the details:

JANUARY 2018:

-Kat von D Metal Mini  – I’m honestly not sure why I bought this palette as it was never something I enjoyed using, even when forcing myself to use it during my weekly rotations. I just really find myself not enjoying her eyeshadow palettes like I used to. That being said, this was decluttered from my stash and has had a new home for a while now. I’m glad I removed it from my collection because it didn’t really inspire me.

MARCH 2018:

Natasha Denona Mini Sunset  – I had a lot of trouble with this one when swatching it. I remember posting several Insta Stories about how I just wasn’t a fan of the pigment, etc. however on the eyes it wasn’t so bad. It’s actually one of my favorite mini of hers and I think it would be something I’d consider purchasing now if I didn’t have it.

-Tarte Be a Mermaid  – I went palette crazy when Sephora went palette crazy – releasing all these eyeshadow palettes at once. I actually really like this one even though the selection of mattes it offers is really poor. I think there are 2-3 matte shades out of a 14-shadow palette. I did a review on it a while back, which you can see HERE, but it has been discontinued. I definitely didn’t need it in my collection, though. The display got the best of me.

Pat McGrath Bronze Ambition  – this is a palette that I love looking at and don’t use as much as I should. I think its my favorite of all her 6-pan eyeshadow palettes she has released. The warm colors are absolutely amazing and blend beautifully, and they are my go-to type of shades. I definitely need to use this one more.

Violet Voss Like a Boss – I don’t know why I don’t pull my violet voss eyeshadows out more to use and play with – I am a big fan of their formula and have almost all of their palettes – but they don’t get used nearly enough. I need to add them to my weekly rotations and use them because I know I couldn’t declutter them.

-Pat McGrath Platinum Bronze – this palette seemed to be everyone’s favorite but not mine. I think its okay; the colors are definitely rich in pigment and blend nicely as I’ve used this once or twice, but because they house all cool tones, it isn’t reached for much. I know I picked this up to complete the 6-eyeshadow trio she released, but looking back, I shouldn’t have bought it. I wont declutter it, though.

-Pat McGrath Subversive  – here is another gorgeous eyeshadow palette that I bought mostly to complete the trio. I hope I don’t offend anyone by saying this, but this is another purchase I probably should have saved my money on. Don’t get me wrong, its a nice palette – but its not something I reach for, so its not getting a lot of use in my collection.

JULY 2018

-Natasha Denona Mini Lila – Here’s another palette that was nice, but I could have gone without. Really, I have the regular Lila palette and although its more expensive, its probably 100x better than this mini. I remember some of the shades being a little hard to blend out for me. The color scheme is nice, but I definitely did not need this.

AUGUST 2018:

Fenty Beauty Moroccan Spice  – This has to be one of my favorite eyeshadow palette purchases of the year. I’m not sure why more people didn’t fall in love with it, and why it didn’t get great review – lol. I am such a huge fan of this one and loved every look I did with it and loved including it in my rotations. Aside from the product performance, the packaging was nice as well.

NARS Atomic Blonde  – Here’s another palette I think I have used two or three weeks in a rotation but feel that I could definitely use more often. I included it in here because its got shadows in it, but it is ultimately a face and eye palette. The colors in here are so warm toned and bronze, I am really in love with this one and the looks it gives, which aren’t too many but enough for me. This one isn’t available anymore, so I’m glad I was able to get my hands on it.

Natasha Denona Camel  – this is a funny one, because I’ve included it in various rotations, but its not one that I *rave* about. But let me tell you: as boring as this might look to some, its a palette that wont give you many looks, but it will give you solid ones that you can do super quickly in the mornings and walk out the door without worrying about whether or not you look nice. Its definitely a work horse palette and I would even go as far as saying a staple because its helped me put together looks with many other palettes.

-Violet Voss Flamingo  – I remember wanting and wanting this one so bad and getting excited I was finally able to get my hands on it and guess what – I haven’t even touched it. It’s not that I don’t like VV – I’ve already stated earlier that I do, its just that I bought so many at once that this one got put on the back burner and here I am, winter 2019 and still unused. I feel two ways: glad I got it, but probably a waste of money since Summer 2019 will bring on a whole new collection of palettes I will probably want to get my hands on.

-Huda Beauty Coral Obsessions – Here’s another summery palette that I shouldn’t have gotten because I’ve never used it. The colors are nice, but in general, these mini palettes by Huda go untouched in my collection. I probably should have stopped at warm and mauve obsessions, but once upon a time I *needed* them all.

HudaBeauty Rose Gold Remastered – I am probably one of the few who enjoyed this one much more than the original. I didn’t really like the glitter shades in the original, but in these, they are more of a creamy consistency and I like that. I really like this one and I’m happy to have it in my collection.

SEPTEMBER 2018:

-Natasha Denona Mini Star – This one is a nice one – but I wasn’t super impressed with it. I don’t have the regular palette to compare it to, but it probably isn’t up to par with that formula, as I’ve seen from people who reviewed it and have both. Could I have done without it? Probably. But it’s sooo nice. Also, after photographing this one it fell and cracked. I was able to save it but now I feel bad for not appreciating it enough! Lol

OCTOBER 2018:

Pat McGrath Bronze Temptation – This one is one I haven’t really used, but I am glad its in my collection – I just cant really resist these warm tones. Therefore, if a palette consists of mostly these shades – its a done deal for me. Plus that green shade is definitely a nice added bonus!

-Pat McGrath Metalmorphosis – I’ve used this palette several times, and I really like the color scheme. I think you can do nice, natural-ish looks with it without being overtop. The only annoying thing about this palette is the lack of matte shades – there are literally no matte shades, so you would be forced to bring out other shadows to complete a look. Also, I wasn’t a fan of the stark white shade. In fact, I’m not a fan of any white eyeshadow shades.

Natasha Denona Cranberry – I couldn’t resist this one. I’ve used it a handful of times, but her regular 5-pan shadows are way nicer than the minis. The color scheme is absolutely beautiful and there was a multi-dimensional shade in here I just couldn’t get over. Definitely not used enough, but definitely glad to have it.

NOVEMBER 2018:

-Huda Beauty New Nudes – I’ve used this palette one time, and I remember being semi unhappy with the look. For a Christmas event, I used the brown/mauve shades to try to make a deeper mauve/smoke look… and it came out super pink on me. I like pink, but it was weird the darkest shades resulted in that. I need to try again, definitely. But as beautiful as it is, I’m on the fence.

NARS Ignited – I love everything NARS, this palette included. I knew when I saw it I had to have it. The handful of times I’ve worn it I’ve been happy with the looks. The nice thing about these shades is that you can do different daytime looks and the shimmer shades will look nice. It’s not my favorite NARS palette – but I like it enough to justify having it.

THOUGHTS & CONCLUSION.

Well, there we have it. My thoughts on the 20 palettes I purchased at Sephora in 2018. If you saw a “-” by the palette, it’s to let you know these were the palettes I could have done without. So, in total, after reflecting back and having used them, I felt I could have done without 10 palettes. That is slashing my purchase by half.

I really need to be careful and invest time in researching and researching again whether or not these items are really needed in my collection. Of the 10, I only decluttered 1 of these, since the others are a little harder to let go of. With time, if they aren’t being used, they will be moved out of my collection. However, for now, I will be sure to use at least 1 or 2 of them in my weekly rotations.

2019 is definitely my year to seriously consider whether palettes being released will bring something new to my collection or whether I have the colors somewhere in my collection/have a palette that can make similar eye looks. I decided to only reflect on eyeshadow palettes because they are my ultimate weakness.

Have you taken a look back at your spending habits?! How are you attempting to change them this year?! Were there things you bought you could have gone without, haven’t used much, etc?! This was definitely an eye opener as it was just one store that I bought all this from.

Hope you enjoyed this tremendously long post! Talk to you soon!

  1. I really love reading this post Denise! I found it interesting how many of your palettes didn’t really get much use after the initial honeymoon phase wore off – especially how many of them were Natasha Denona and Pat McGrath. 2018 definitely seemed to be the year of the palette and I think brands have have paid more into competition with each other than releasing really cohesive, unique palettes!
